You know, I had a good feeling about today. I had been sitting at my desk for an hour when the boss' assistant yet again consults me about the website, (that's the company one - not mine!). I appear to be the only one in the building that seems to have the faintest idea about how websites work and what's involved. Anyway, the issue about paying fees to the host for updating a few lines on the website is raised again. The problem being was that the company never took out a maintenance contract, thinking they'd only have to update a few pages and leave everything else intact. They should have known better, we're an evolving company, nothing stands still, job specs are fluid, people move around the place all the time. Since joining myself, I've done marketing, office management, HR, box shifting, technical engineering and IT helpdesk, and my case isn't unique. As the company changes, so do we.
Anyway, I digress.... The discussion moved on to bringing the control of the website in house and the possible implications of that. I explained that I would be more than happy to look after the site, but it wasn't possible at the moment because of my workload. At this point I decided it was time to talk to my boss and explain the flurry of emails before it got out of hand. We sat down and had a little chat and I explained that I'd love to do it, but realised it wasn't an option at this time. To my surprise she agreed with me and said bringing it in house would be far more cost effective and would discuss it with her boss. I have to say the whole thing has got me very excited about work again. We will wait and see what transpires over the next couple of weeks. Watch this space!
