You Are Here

I spent most of yesterday evening installing Wayfinder on my SE P900. It was at times infuriating, trying to get each bit to work and talk to the other, but by this morning I think I've just about got it functioning.

I picked up the package from the depot, brought it home and pulled out lots of interesting items including the GPS, neck strap, battery, car charger, mains charger and memory stick. I had a good read of the instructions, installed the software on the PC and set to work...

The first problem I ran into was installing the software. On the website you have the option of downloading the files to the PC or using GPRS. I tried in vain to click the links to install to my PC, so with a heavy sigh I browsed to the site with my phone. Three attempts later and I have the first of two required install files. During installation of the second file a problem with the internet developed and I was forced to start from scratch as I wasn't able to install the second file again. So, second time around the install failed. I was beginning to wonder if this was a sign. Anyway, the third attempt was a success.

Then I charged and set up the GPS receiver. Two hours later the unit was ready. "Just stick it on your car dashboard or next to a window..." the cheery brochure said, but no matter what I tried I could not get unit to pick up a thing from inside, so I was forced into the garden. Several minutes later the icon lit up and I had a signal - a weak one, but a signal all the same.

The remainder of the night involved me deciphering the less than accurate instructions, but I got there eventually.

Then I tried a "dry run" First, my work address, it recognised the post code - good, but then when the post code link was pressed it said not found, and to refine the search. How can I refine it any more???

Next an address in the English Riviera town of Weston - again, not found. GAH!!!

Final go, an address in the middle of Bracknell, I thought "how much more urban can you get? It has to find this one". First and second attempt, not found. Finally on the third attempt a result!

I have learnt through trial and error that there is little point punching a company name into the "company" field along with a post code - you'll almost never find it. In my case I had to put the name of the industrial park in - it wasn't accurate, but it was close enough.

Anyway, this morning I navigated to work and I've sussed out how to use the "favourites" option and so far no unknown addresses.

The only other problem I've encountered is the way the software keeps crashing my phone. If you leave the software open and click back to the control panel it's fine, just don't try to exit, otherwise you may have to take the battery out to turn it off!!

Anyway, all in all, a very nice product. Frustrating in the beginning, but once you've got familiar with it, it's very nice.

There is an excellent review here: pdf Format
